Parties!

To balance the arduous studies, you have to have some fun every once in a while – the teekkarit and the TKY have been known of their wild parties for more than a century. This page presents the most important annual TKY parties.

Annual Ball

The TKY Annual Ball is the most solemn of the Student Union’s formal parties. The Annual Ball is usually held in November. The occasion begins by a cocktail event, where the guests of honour present their greetings to the Student Union. The Annual Ball itself is an academic dinner party with speeches, and especially a Speech for a Woman, the Teacher of the Year award and medals are presented. The event ends in a ball with traditional dances. After the main Annual Ball event, there is a more informal after-party. The next morning will be celebrated with a silliaamiainen or a herring breakfast, to try to make one feel better by eating after all the partying.

Gravitaatio

Gravitaatio (gravitation), also known as Gravis is an annual afterparty, held traditionally after sledging in the Ullis or Ullanlinnanmäki on Shrove Tuesdays. Every year the Dipoli or a night club in Helsinki will be absolutely filled with partygoers having good time.

Wappu

The May Day is celebrated by having a brunch at Ullanlinnanmäki on May 1. The actual May Day festivities start, however, on the previous day at the latest. The Wappu parties are on the eve of May Day at Dipoli and they are the biggest overall-party during the May Day festivities. For the last few years, the Wappu parties have featured mostly Otaniemi’s own bands. The party also features a gigantic disco. The right to wear a student cap starts on 1st of May and every self-respecting teekkari will wear a student cap as the Dipoli clock strikes midnight.

Lakinlaskijaiset

The Lakinlaskijaiset is an event, held traditionally on the last day of September, where the teekkari caps are laid to rest for the winter. Each year the Dipoli is filled with partygoers having fun. The Lakinlaskijaiset features Finnish top artists.
