Bike rental service

TKY provides a Bike rental service for exchange students in the cooperation with Bikepoli bicycling assosiation (http://bikepoli.tky.fi/english_index.php). The bicycles are city bikes of good quality the rental service offers an alternative to traveling by bus to Otaniemi and is a great way to get to know the surrounding areas better. The bikes are not used during winter.

What to do if you want to rent a bicycle?

First you have to pay a rental deposit to the cashier at TKY secretariat (opening hours at www.tky.fi/en). There is a 200 EUR deposit out of which you will get 180 EUR back if you rent the bike for one season, 160 EUR for two seasons and 140 EUR for three seasons. Spring season is from 20.3-31.5, summer season is from 10.6-20.8 and autumn season is from 1.9-15.11. Three seasons is the maximum rental time. When paying, you have to show your student card or receipt of paid membership fee (not needed for summer trainees at TKK), your ID and give your Finnish contact details. After paying you will get your bike by contacting Bikepoli ([email protected]).

The bike must be returned to Bikepoli after each season for check-up and service. This must be done even though you have rented the bike for 3 seasons. If you do not return the bike before the date given to you by Bikepoli, you will not receive your deposit back. You must contact Bikepoli at least two weeks before the deadline to set up a time for returning the bike.

How to take care of the bike?

Lubricate the chain once in a while, preferably before it starts to squeal. Punctured tires can be repaired by oneself and also other adjustments can be made if the user knows what he or she is doing. If there is a bigger problem, you are welcome to visit the Bikepoli do-it-yourself workshop at Otakaari 20, information can be found at http://bikepoli.tky.fi/workshop.php . Normal prices apply.

The bike should be kept locked at all times, when not in use. There are two locks included; one on the frame of the bike and one U-shaped lock. The U-lock should be used to lock the bike to a solid object, a fence, bikestand etc. If the bike is stolen, the deposit will not be returned.

When something bigger breaks, it is always considered depending on the case. If the broken part was clearly broken because it has been in continuous use, then there will not be any costs to the user. If, however, it is clear that the bike has been mistreated, the price for the replacement parts will be deducted from the deposit.
