TKY

How to apply

Notice for persons looking for accommodation

The Representative Council of the Aalto University Student Union has in its meeting 4/2009 approved the housing rules and the point calculation formula for the forming of the housing queues. The new rules will come into force on 1 January 2010. All housing applications will be updated according to the new point system at the beginning of the next year.

The most significant change to the current situation is the right of all student union members to apply to any apartment.

The following sections of TKY’s old point calculation formula for those who are applying for a shared apartment will be removed completely, which will change the queuing order:

- current flat in the capital region (- 50 points)

and

- the applicant lives with one’s parents in the capital region (- 20 points)

The definition of neighbouring municipalities will also change.

Also in the future, one can only apply to the studios in the Teekkari Village only when living in a shared apartment there.

The priority order of the family apartments will not change significantly. The changes mostly concern those who are moving from one apartment to another and those already living in the Student Union's apartments. In the future, the applicants who are already living in shared apartments in the Teekkari Village will not receive additional points.

Currently valid contracts will not be changed.

The approved rules will probably be available on the Student Union website during November.

Before you make the registration and fill the application, please read this information carefully.

SINGLE ROOMS (CELL 1 RM) and ONE-ROOMED APARTMENTS (STUDIO)

Students starting their studies in the fall (regardless of the year of their acceptance into the Helsinki University of Technology TKK) may submit their applications for a single room with shared facilities in July of the year their studies commence; applications are updated into the waiting list in August. Only new students submitting their applications in July receive a so-called freshman point. Please see the point calculation table.

Members of the Student Union TKK may apply for Student Union housing. The right of residence in Teekkarikylä student village is 5 or 2 years, calculated from the year when the applicant first attends TKK. Further details can be found under "Right of Residence".

FILLING IN THE APPLICATION AND ITS PROCESSING

Please fill in the on-line application form. You must register as a user before you can fill in the application. Remember to keep your current address and other contact details up to date. If an applicant submits an incomplete application or gives incorrect information, the application will be rejected. An application will also be rejected if the applicant’s information is out of date.

Please submit a separate application for each type of housing. You may specify preferences such as a certain apartment block, floor, the direction it faces, size etc. (please see the list of housing for rent). In this case, an applicant is put on a waiting list only for those apartments that meet his/her specified preferences.

You may change your application preferences while on the waiting list so long as you make the change before you are offered a room/apartment. An applicant is removed from the waiting list if he/she:

  • does not accept the housing offered
  • fails to respond to the housing offer by the date specified
  • has given incorrect or incomplete information
  • fails to renew his/her application

When an application has been processed by the Student Union TKK and the waiting list has been updated, an applicant can follow his/her progress on the waiting list and make any possible changes or corrections to his/her personal information or application. You can find your application points, your placing on the waiting list, and the period of validity for your application under My Application. You can find the submission date, the desired date of acceptance and the points given to the applications of the first 500 applicants under waiting list.

An application is valid for six (6) months from the date it is submitted. The points for an application are checked whenever any changes or renewals are made. An applicant’s placing on the waiting list may therefore change according to his/her need for accommodation. Corrections and changes appear on the waiting list only after the next update. Waiting lists are updated as necessary (at least once a month).

The system sends an applicant two electronic notifications about the expiration of his/her application. The first notification arrives about one month and the second approximately two weeks before the date the application expires. If an applicant fails to renew his/her application, he/she will be removed from the list.

The special freshman point (+ 1 point) is valid for only six (6) months and it is removed on 31 January.

Comments and complaints regarding the outcome of an application must be made in writing and addressed to the Housing Department.

PLEASE NOTE! The listing of apartments does not mean that the places mentioned in the list are necessarily available; rather, it is a list of student accommodation. When a resident gives notice to terminate his/her rent agreement, this accommodation is offered to the first person on the waiting list.

Only those applicants registered at TKK are granted accommodation from the waiting list
